Salem Spider Infestation — Identifying the Risk Level
Most spiders in Salem homes cause no harm and need no intervention. The exceptions — Black Widow and Brown Recluse — are present across much of the US and deliver bites that require prompt medical treatment. Recognising Black Widow and Brown Recluse Spiders
Black Widow: glossy black body with a distinctive red hourglass marking on the underside of the abdomen. Prefers dark, undisturbed areas — garage corners, wood piles, meter boxes, and outdoor furniture. Brown Recluse: light to medium brown with a violin-shaped marking on the upper body. Found in cardboard boxes, closets, basement clutter, and behind stored items. Do not attempt to handle or trap either species — call a licensed specialist.
